Declutter challenge day 6

Day six of the Wirecutter declutter challenge, which was back in March, is to “Just get the thing” (that helps you stay organized). There are many organizing products out there, and it can be hard to know if buying one will be a positive addition or just another item you will end up donating.

While I recommend my clients not buy a lot of storage before we finish going through everything, I like these suggested items to help contain the clutter and keep you organized.

The car is a place where clutter gets out of control. They recommend this car organizer. I bought a similar one, and it has been a game-changer. I carry a lot of items in my car—towels, reusable bags, water, a first aid kit, dog bowls, and packing tape for the rare times I mail a package from the post office—so a car organizer is essential to keeping it all in one place.

Everything that was once in random places in my car is now contained. This organizer has lots of pockets to store things like a first aid kit, wipes, and other things that come in handy while traveling.

Another useful item they recommend is a lid organizer like this one for the kitchen. It's especially useful if your food storage containers are in a cabinet that seems to swallow the lids.

These Velcro ties are great for cord management. They can be used to tie up cords and cables at your desk and long cords for appliances. I also like using binder clips to contain my coax cable to my router, which is long enough to run the length of our house, and the cords around my desk.

I recently added an ironing board wall mount and a tool organizer (for broom, mop, or garden tools) to my laundry room, which now feels bigger and cleaner without these things leaning up against the wall. Both were inexpensive and made me wonder how I hadn’t thought of using them before. I also love my cabinet rollouts like these in my kitchen.

That’s it for the 6-day turned 3-month declutter challenge. I hope you got some good ideas!
